Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Do you fill pools?

Answer: No, our agency stopped filling pools in 2021. Individuals that reside within the City limits can fill their pools with a hydrant water by calling the City of Gray Water Department and requesting a meter.

In order to legally take water from a Fire Hydrant, you must use a City of Gray Fire Hydrant Meter. This meter can be rented from the City of Gray Water Department, located at 109 James St. Release or use of water from a fire hydrant without an approved fire hydrant meter is illegal for anyone other than the City of Gray Fire Department. Hose can be rented from a retail department.

Question: Where is your Fire station and how many are there?

Answer: The City of Gray operates one Fire Department and it is located at 111 James St. Gray, Ga. This Fire station houses 2 Engines, 1 Aerial and 1 squad. Our agency also houses one engine for the Jones County Fire Department to respond outside the City.

Answer: Contact our Fire Chief at 478-936-7119 or email him at keisele@grayfd.com.

Question: Why do you send so many vehicles to a fire, especially a small fire?

Answer: Units are dispatched according to information received by Dispatch. Many times the type of situation found upon arrival is very different from the situation dispatched. And, part of responding to an emergency situation means being prepared to deal with the worst case scenario. Discovering we need more units upon arrival is often too late. Experience has taught us that it's better to have too much help than not enough.

There are a number of specialized roles that firefighters undertake on a fire call and it's necessary to have enough firefighters on the scene. Firefighting is a very labor intensive activity. If you get behind because there are not enough firefighters on the call, it's more difficult to extinguish a fire quickly.

Question: Why are your Fire Trucks lime / Yellow?

Answer: Depending on the agency, you will see that fire apparatus come in all kinds of colors. We paint our apparatus “Lime Yellow” for safety. This color is a much more visible color, especially under low light conditions, than the traditional red and is involved in less than half of the amount of collisions. Yellow is also an easier color to maintain and stays looking new longer.
